Background:
Originally The Gold Coast Branch of MTAQ Inc. was established by a committed group of music teachers. This has grown to a friendly and flourishing committee with a growing professional and associate membership who meet regularly for meetings, professional development workshops, student based activities and social events. In 2010 the Branch changed its name to MTAQ Inc. Gold Coast Teachers' Group when it combined with Central Branch Brisbane where the business and memberships are handled. The Teachers' Group continues to promote and present all the same activities as the original Group and the dedicated committee remains enthusiastic in providing opportunities for Teachers and Students of the Gold Coast and elsewhere.
Newsletter and advertising:
Newsletters are regularly circulated to our local membership with information about coming events, and other music related activities. Advertising for sponsors or businesses is also available in these newsletters. As members of MTAQ Inc members also receive the quarterly “Bravura” magazine circulated to members throughout Queensland.
Regular activities include:
Meetings: MTAQ Inc. Gold Coast Teachers' Groups holds 4 meetings per year. These friendly meetings are efficiently conducted with the promotion of music education and encouragement of teachers and students. The meetings also serve as a chance for teachers to network and share information and advice.
Workshops/ Master classes: A variety of workshops or master classes are conducted during the year catering for teachers and students covering a wide variety of topics such as: Student performer master classes; Lectures on future careers for students; Examination repertoire workshops; Written Theory workshops; Composition workshops; History of Music workshops and many more.
Student Performance Recitals: An opportunity for students to perform at a suitable venue in a very encouraging atmosphere. Students of any instrument/voice are welcome to perform 1 or more pieces which helps develop confidence, and promotes the sharing of repertoire and musical styles.
Teacher / adult student informal performance soirees: A chance for busy teachers and their developing students to perform in a friendly environment within a social backdrop.
Major Event – Annual Composers Competition:
Students of all ages throughout Australia enter original compositions, covering a wide range of instruments, voice and ensemble combinations and styles. These are then performed live for an audience (or recorded for those who cannot attend), and adjudicated by a visiting Australian composer. Some recipients of past awards ave continued a musical career in composition or performance. Trophies are offered for local sections, and cash prizes for open sections. Encouragement awards are also offered, and all composers receive a “certificate of participation”.
